Saw one of the most technically sound movies ever made. Maya bAzaar was originally made in telegu or malyalam I donno... but it has been dubbed in all South Indian languages.
The story is based on some mythological event, but that is not too relevent. What is cool about the movie is that:
1) The special FX are really cool. ILM standards if you ask me. You need to see it to believe it. Maybe the scope of Indian cinema was not enough, but for an old black and white film, the FX are far better than recent (better financed) Bollywood releases. I am talking about films like duplicate here. There are some stop motion sequences, but it escaped me as to how they made floating objects interact with real people without the use of animation. The FX were like the flying cycles in ET. Really. There are scenes where the char morphs into another char (although its just a fading thing, I accept), People grow bigger while objects in the surroundings remain the same, and as I said, people interact with imaginary forces.
2) The acting and the directions is all as if it were done for theatre. Gives a really comic appearence to the entire movie, but makes it a more fun thing to see. This move desperately needs to be remade in hindi.
3) There is this one sequence where a guy actually pretends to be a girl by changing form, and this is shown in a very nice way. There are subtle actions and gestures by the female actress which somehow shows that she is actually male.
4) The music is catchy, the photography is splendid and not shaky or indistinct as in newer southie films.
Nice movie. Must watch the whole of it sometime.
