Dream Diary everyone is an asshole edition

I was with a bunch of friends, at a time when I have daily classes. There were a whole bunch of people, particularly remember two guys and three girls. We were at a friend's place near Saket, which is close to my house in Thane, but on Thane East instead of Thane west. In reality, its in Thane west only.

Anyway, do not know why we gathered there, but basically its not a class project, and we just waste time. One of the guys tells me to stay away from one of the girls, as she is misleading me. These are all people I do not know in real life btw. We all leave by mid afternoon, so everyone goes outside the building. I ask the misleading girl are we going to college, and she says no. I say, but I thought we would be going later, she says, no Im bunking and hops into a rickshaw. Two rickshaws quickly fill with six people and they go off, leaving me alone. 

I walk to the end of the road, see a familiar painting on a public toilet, that I had noticed on the way in. I also realise that I have lost my mask, and look for it frenetically in all my pockets, finding no mask but a handkerchief. I keep searching, and eventually find a cheap cloth mask with a decorative print that keeps falling off and has a bad elastic. I walk down to a junction in the road, and there are a bunch of free rickshaws as well as shared rickshaws. There are also some people forming a line for the shared rickshaws. I notice a clothes sale to the right and go in. 

I asked for full sleeved t-shirts and get shown a lot of thick, heavy but ageing shirts. I pick up three shirts after a lot of searching. They are frayed and ageing, are thick and warm, and have ethnic patterns. I pick a fine floral grey and black one, a stroped brown and beige one, and a dark blue and sky blue one with dragonscale print. I ask how much each is and am told something like "65". I mentally calculate that everything should be around 250-300 at max, and check out some masks. There are some items in the shop that are not clothes. They are selling magazines, toys and food as well. 

All the shop attendees seem to be either loitering around me or trying to help me. The owner comes and asks them to go back to work and that other customers are waiting. The boys say, this fellow is buying three shirts! The shopkeeper goes back to the cash counter. Eventually, I get to the counter. Shopkeeper asks another boy to show my the bill. The bill is 44,000. I say, each of these shirts are 300 each at max, throw back all the second hand shirts, and head back out. 

It starts to rain. Now, I cannot find a rickshaw, no one is willing to go to Vasant Vihar, and all the share rickshaws are for thane station. One guy without a rickshaw but wearing the brown uniform says, come with mee. I cross the road and see a whole row of drowned vehicles. I can see the top of a rickshaw as the third vehicle in a row. This man goes in, and lifts the entire rickshaw above the water line.

This is like Baahubali + Luke Cage. I take out my phone to record this amazing feat, but by that time, he has already raised the rickshaw above the water and is walking towards me with the rickshaw on his shoulder. Then, while walking towards me, he and the rickshaw together disappear into a drain. I expect him to come out again and take out my phone, to take a few photos. They are all blurry and hazy, like water has gotten into the electronics. I keep wiping the screen as if that will help. 

A couple of minutes pass, and I pocket the phone, and head towards the drain. I tell him "breathe, come up" as I see him struggling to dislodge the rickshaw which is stuck in a deeper hole within the drain. He yells back at me "typical of entitled riders, to shout out commands first instead of enquiring how the vehicle is, or how I am". I get a sense that this guy's superpowers include breathing underwater as well, and that he is trying to exploit me by blaming me for his troubles. I just ignore him and head back to the share rickshaw stand, without engaging with him any further. He instantly leaves the rickshaw and starts yelling at the back of my head "hey! come back! where are you going asshole!" But I ignore him.

Across the street I keep yelling Vasant Vihar at passing rickshaws, they keep saying no, keep getting filled up, and keep disappearing. One guy shouts "no, but I will take you to Vartak Nagar, get in at the Thane". I figure I can easily find another ride from there, and run behind him, to the "Thane", which is a small police station. I can read the "Thane" in blue letters written on the yellow building. He nods at me. There is already one man inside sitting on the extreme left. There are nylon ropes criss crossing all over the insides of the rickshaw. The man huffs, puffs, sighs and scoots in to the extreme right, inviting me to sit in the middle. I see that the ropes are elaborate braces to hold your knees, ankles and arms. I scoot inwards, towards the middle seat, and physically move sideways in my bed, waking up.  

A hole within an underwater pond is a recurring theme. Also struggles to use a smartphone. The exploitative people is something new though. This is one of those dreams I would have forgotten had I not written everything down instantly, as soon as I woke up.

Ukraine crisis

This pot has been boiling for a while now in the region. But the fight is not localised, its a global one, one of democracy against authoritarianism. What is happening in Ukraine is just one battle in that fight. 

I normally stay out of politics, even with myself. What I do not like is the othering of any people, where people take a "defensive" stance and go on the offensive based on a perceived, paranoid threat. I was once asked what I would do when Muslims attacked my house. This kind of othering is what I do not like. When there is a loss of life or a threat of it anywhere in the world, the security and safety of everyone is called into question. 

The announcement of this particular war actually took place in 2007. 

One side of the story is that Kremlin wants to halt the eastward spread of all western institutions, as a democratic Ukraine would be a threat to Putin and his "cronies". Another side of the story is that Ukrainian nationalism was fostered by the Soviet Union along with the nationalism of several small nations as a counter to the biggest threat to the Soviet Union, which was Russian Nationalism. Under the influence of western fear and propoganda, Ukrainians who would have otherwise supported Russia do not, which is therefore a threat to Russia. Either way, Russia is threatened. The countries that are friendly to Russia such as Iran, Turkey and India would be seen as weak from the west. Turkey is a part of NATO and India is a part of QSD, they risk alienating their western allies if they do not condemn Russia, and at the same time cannot afford to antagonise Russia. According to Russia, the US stands to benefit anyway as sanctions would mean that US gets to export more LNG to European nations instead of Russia. If the world is not able to stop Russia from taking control of Ukraine, then China could make a similar move on Taiwan. What is at stake here is the global supply of energy resources and semiconductors. "WWIII" is not over water, but oil and chips.

My blog through the ages

I'm working on a wellness app, and one of the most powerful techniques is journaling. I cannot believe that I've been doing that for so many years. Here is a look at my blog over the years. 

2005 - The original look. The Greek text reads "all of this must be Greek to you". HAHA very funny. Didn't laugh. Also I was obsessed with aliens and anagrams. I do not know what inspired the name, but it was probably an anagram for "cryptic nonsense". Again, HAHA. 

2011. 104E. That was the model of my monitor. I really do not remember where the image is from. Anyway, this was the state of my site when it was hijacked by Russians. Notice that the header still had the "Next Blog" link. 

2013. I was quick to see that the future of the web was mobile, and thus the title image was a mobile screenshot. Was very influenced by Pixlr and Adobe Kuler back then, which is now Adobe Color and still a tool that I continue to use on a regular basis. 

2014. The banner image was a panorama made from multiple screenshots taken on the Moon Base Alpha game by NASA. It is a really cool game. Also notice the vastly expanded tag list.

2018. Modern theme. My sensibilities shifted after I got back to work, after attempting to and failing to find love in 6 years of college. The effort was basically to stay in college to party and have fun. The mission was partially accomplished. The formatting of the older content got fucked. I still love Moby Dick, the Whiteness of the Whale being my favorite chapter, and Ishmael thinking that the landlord of the Sprouty Inn or whatever its name was, was full of "farrago" when he says that Queequeg has gone to sell his heads is probably where Shashi Tharoor had to look it up in the dictionary. I'm guessing, don't quote me on this. Haven't finished all the quests in Warframe. The birthday gift was the proto-excalibur noggle statue from i666. Omg I've forgotten the guy and the gift. Guess was really happy back then. Good times. 

2019. I was really into GoT, but who wasn't back then. But then, I was really into GoT, and have it on the authority of the PR for the JioPhone, who walked into office to hand me the device for "first impressions", because we could not, in all fairness do a review as Reliance owned Network18 and Firstpost. My ringtone was GoT, my t-shirt was GoT. I knew all the fan theories, had read the books, participated in a number of forums, and had it all in my head. Now it has all vapourised, just like the fandom for the series. And honestly, the fake leakers, the AI guesses and the theories were all better than what it turned out to be. What a colossal disappointment. What happened to blackstar? What happened to Meera Reed? What is in the crypts of Winterfell? What is with the weirwood network? What happens to all of Robert's bastards? What is the White Tower up to? What does Manderly end up doing? Why do we not get to see Nymeria? What were Varys and Illyrio Mopatis up to? So many questions that will never be answered. Sigh. TBH, I blame the TV series only, I can live with GRRM never finishing the books, it is kind of fun to live in a perpetual zone of theorycrafting and metadiscussions, but cannot forgive the TV series not wrapping up the loose ends that they themselves brought up. That's just bad, Dumb and Dumber.

2019-2. Considering the top posts on the archived pages, I guess there are some anonymous peeps out there who see the value in random blogs and are acutely aware that blogs tend to disappear, like most of the local blogosphere links to the right, as well as the blogs of my classmates from college. Either they have been deleted, or hijacked by Russians, or made private. It's a mercy that a few are merely abandoned. None of them are active the last time I checked. Anyway, for the Spotify tools, most of them no longer worked as Spotify made changes to its API, integrating most of the good third party tools as part of its own service, and telling the other developers who spent time on developing third party tools to fuck off. Majorly. Spotify, like Swiggy is one of those services that I hate, but am compelled to use because of lack of better alternatives. 

2022 - today. Im struggling to set a good profile picture. Not sure if I want something scientific, or something techy. There was a time when I had set up an elaborate script, where every time you refresh the page, a new cover image loads. Aint got time for that shit any more. I doubt if it would work with the new blogger too. Will probably find something, but I kept house and cleared up some messy things. I added the sections in the sidebar for my social links and the news sites I work for and worked for. I brought back the blogs of clasmates, "world famous blogs", and the local blogosphere for... nostalgia value and historical accuracy. I set the archival period from daily to monthly, so the hierarchy tree does not go bonkers. Changed the name from AMJ's blog to Aditya Madanapalle's blog. It may be narcissistic, but I no longer have any hesitation in praising myself, taking my own name, or talking about personal things publicly. In fact, it is high time you started doing this, Aditya. What's more, I backed up the site on Archive.org. This stuff is important to the human race. And future technoarchaeologists.

Dream Diary IRCTC edition

 I had a quick dream while taking a kitty nap for 1/2 hour in the middle of intense work. Hope my boss does not read this. Anyway, in it I dreamed that I was walking through a railway station in the middle of nowhere, one of those small town ones, and stepped into a toilet, only to find it rather large and with a ton of facilities. There was a jacuzzi, in the middle of which there was a natural pond, in the middle of which there were Koi fish swimming around. I walk through to see what else is there, and there is an office, where an officer is dissecting a baby elephant, and an even smaller specimen. This has to be from the items displayed in the Natural History Museum in Coimbatore. He goes somewhere for some work, and I take out my camera to photograph the baby elephants, but think the better of it. He comes back seeing me with my camera out and asks if I did take photos, and I say no, to which he nods approvingly and goes away. I move around the bed on which he is dissecting the specimens, which are kept next to a bag and a notebook. Accidently, I tip the bed, and the specimens fall down, with the bag toppling over. I tried to save the dissected baby elephants, but they fall to the ground anyway. He comes back and I tell him that the bed is broken and tilting, to which he responds, yes I know, and slams it back into place. I leave him and walk through the toilet again. 

The Jacuzzi

I take out my phone to show off to my friends this ultracool public toilet, but I simply cannot seem to capture a good image. Either the photos are too blurry, or they do not save, or all the fish are not there in the frame. I then take a rapid series of images, and tap one of them, which makes me enter the koi cave pond. I tap out, surprised, which is when I woke up. 

On a side note, Im fascinated by the architecture in my dreams, and maybe I will try to make more recreations of it. 

Swiggy Feedback

I sent this feedback to Swiggy today. Maybe im a little angry, and very sad. It can serve as the promised part II of why food in Delhi sucks. 

Okay, there are no other better apps available, so have to use Swiggy, but there are some pointers that will make the app far better. 

1. Please ensure that the restaurants match the images and descriptions used to the packages that they deliver. Thaaliwala and Mumbai Goli Vada Pav in Delhi are examples of offenders. The latter sent veg patty in flat pav, which is not at all like the image they used in the photo. The former, sent several small containers which I specifically wanted to avoid, instead of one big packaged box as shown in the image. There is no option to get a refund for misleading packaging, but Im conscious about waste, and do not want to throw away 20 pieces of plastic tape instead of one or four. I feel strongly about this point, and it is fair to expect restaurants to match what they deliver to what they show in the pictures. 

2. Make sure cloud kitches have comparable charges. Healthiemenu and Yummy world seem to come from same place, have nearly identical menus, similar packaging, but methi moong dal khichdi in one restaurant is 200 bucks, and 150 bucks in the other. Customer will feel cheated in such instances. 

3. Another example, Canteen Central, Great Indian Khichdi, Home Plate, and Meal Studio all have similar menus but different prices, and are delivered from the same place. It is problematic to pick items in four different restaurants, apply discounts, and then figure out which is the cheapest.  

4. For thaalis and combination meals, there is no option to report certain items are different. For example, Thaaliwala sent buttermilk instead of curd, and onion rings instead of salad. Another restaurant, forgot which, sent papad instead of sandige, and did not send kosambri at all, which was included in the listing. I do not want to not pay for entire order because of some missing items. Yummy world sends some chips instead of papad.

Finished watching Cowboy Bebop

 The Netflix series. Pity that it got cancelled, it was really stylish, slick and anime-y. As a space buff, this is one of the few series that somewhat realistically shows what a colonised solar system would look like. I liked it, it was great storytelling, and covered a lot of ground for such a short series. Im tired and sleepy, so not much more from mee today. Good night. Maybe I will have a dream diary tomorrow, if all goes well. 

Sweetmeat

Just a random fact, at one time, both non vegetarian and vegetarian food was referred to as meat. Anything with sugar in it was sweetmeat. 

I was just looking through some of my old posts, and realised for how long this blog has been running. I added a disclaimer for the older stuff, because well, I posted mature content when I was immature. There is also some nasty "humour" in there, that would be considered toxic today. Still, as far as food for thought goes, my previous posts turned out to be something of a sweetmeat for me.

I used to vlog on blip.tv before youtube was a thing. Do not remember the content of these posts, and have lost them too, though archive.org seems to have backed them up, but retrieving them seems to be difficult. A lot of links to geocities and even imgur have disappeared, but at least the blogger images have stayed up. I feel the web mirrors the universe, ever expanding and old things at a distance getting permanently lost, never to be seen again.   

Anyway, it was a window into my thoughts and feelings, maybe of a different person, definitely one that has changed a lot. Reading through the blog made me like myself a bit more, and at the same time, miss myself a bit more too... because all the days I did not take the time to write down something are now lost forever. 

So, although it is going to be a bit late for new year resolutions, this is going to be one of those years, where I am going to be blogging frequently, maybe even multiple times in a day, whenever I feel like it, and whatever I feel like. Have realised that in the rush of doing things, there is very little time for feeling. 

We live in a very different world now, where self care is embraced and mental wellness is spoken about openly. There are few silver linings to the pandemic, but one of them is the increased discussion around mental health. 

Was I feeling something? Yeah, there is a wedding happening to the left at the hall next to ISKON temple, like everyday, but they are playing traditional music today not Punjabi club tracks, and still dancing the hell out, which is a refreshing change. New neighbours have moved into the first floor, they have nice furniture and wallpapers. The building on the right is being reconstructed, and the workers come up from a nice hole in the roof. South Delhi only allows ground + 3 floors, but some people construct a illegal fifth floor on top, known as the Barsati, which means that it is gonna get rekt during the monsoons. My flat is legal and not a Barsati. The building opposite is lit up with celebratory lights. In the middle of all this, I went out to my small balcony and had a smoke. For the first time in a long time, I felt some amount of peace.

Food in Delhi sucks

First of all, Delhi does not understand the concept of a thaali. For Delhi, a thaali is the same as a plate, so every meal is a thaali. Parathas with sabji and onion rings is a thaali. 

Delhi does not understand the concept of a salad. Onion rings are salad. 

Salad, according to Delhi

Delhi does not understand the concept of raita. Whipped curd with salt, pepper and mustard seeds count as raita, Delhi restaurants skimp on on curry leaves and chillis. What's more, they are even stingy with the portions. 

An Idli in Delhi costs 150 bucks, and there is only one place so far that does not pass of some gooey liquid trudge as chutney, and that is Carnatic Cafe. 

People suggest the Andhra Bhavan, Tamil Nadu House or the Karnataka Sangha... maybe they are good for non-veg food, I do not know, but their chutneys suck, their idlis are dry, their vadas are like mouldy rickshaw tyres, their dosas are waay to thick, almost like parathas, their bisibele bhaath is sambhar rice, their tomato rice is sticky and too red, and they do not have chitrana or puliyogare. Even their curd rice sucks. I miss being able to go to any restaurant in the corner to enjoy some good, healthy South Indian food, or Idlis for 20 bucks that you get in Bengaluru. In Delhi, dry flaky idly with really sad chutney is a minimum of 150 bucks. 

There are three Karnataka Bhavans, but all of them are outright liars and thieves. Their "kosambri" is again, onion rings. They send appalam or papad instead of sandige. All the rotis here are thick, not the delicate phulkas you get in Karnataka or Gujarat, even in Gujarat Bhavan, which is actually the best of the lot. 

So, people have told me to eat the food that North India is good for... yeah well, see the first three points. After coming here, I could not finish my food for the first week. I just cannot stand the food here. 

As my dad says, once the parathas stop being hot (which is like 5 minutes in the winters), then they can be used as footwear. 

Continental? The garlic bread is small and thin. North Indian? How much gluten can you possibly consume? Also, they do not understand accompaniments - salad, raita etc. Most things are thick and rubbery. The only consistently safe, good things to eat are chole, dal makhani, kadi and parathas.. there is only so much of that a person can consume! Chinese? Well, that is okay tbh, but the quantities are bad, and the good ones are expensive. 

Also, there is a reason it is called Delhi Belly. So do not give me that crap. Delhi food sucks, and everyone knows it. 

If there is one thing Delhi restaurants do not skimp on, its the paneer. The alu and methi parathas have paneer. The dal khichdi has paneer. The poha has paneer. The fruit salad has paneer. The pizzas and sandwiches have paneer even if it is not mentioned on the menu! Come on, I like my paneer tikkas, but seriously Delhi, paneer is not salt. 

Then I miss the Maharashtrian food. It is only in Mumbai-Thane that you can get good veg kholapuri. Because in Kholapur itself, there is no such dish. In Delhi, it is available, in some restaurants, but it is just mixed vegetables. I enjoy my butter naans with veg kholapuri only, so that option is unavailable for me as well. :(

A vada pav in Delhi is veg patty in a flaky, dry pav. The pav bhaji and misal pav taste the same. There is no option for extra pav in most restaurants, let alone rasa or usal. The misal is a brown trudge without any usal in it, only God knows how they make it. At times the pavs are minuscule, so they give three pavs with the "misal" or tomato bhaji. I mean who serves three pavs? Delhi.

Mumbai Goli Vada pav is the biggest fraud here. Liars. Cheaters. 

All the restaurants on Swiggy are frauds and cheaters. The cloud kitchens have multiple outlets with different rates serving from the same place. The portions, packaging and contents are rarely the same as the images shown. 

There are just a few places that actually serve good food. There is Etsu, Carnatic Cafe, Mandarin Oak, Sly Granny and Caterspoint. Even in most of these places, the portions are underwhelming. There is simply not a good place to order a thaali from. 

So to anyone who says otherwise, food in Delhi sucks. I suspect there will be a part II of this, because I have to eat. 

Flight back to Delhi, huge fans

So I did something stupid. 

Instead of booking back a flight on the 20th of Feb, I booked a flight back on the 20th of March! That just means that Im going to make another trip next month. 

Oh well. 

Had a bit of extra time, so had this new Kingfisher Ultra Max beer for 800 bucks. 

And I also noticed these really huge fans at the airport.

Picking up a pair of eyeballs

So Im in Mumbai, and a friend who is an opthal asked me if I wanted to come to the airport with him to pick up some eyeballs. It was to be a late night drive, leave at around 11:30, go pick up the eyeballs by 12:30, come back by around 1:30 and call it a night. 

Sounded like a good plan, so I went along for the ride, not knowing that it would turn out to be an adventure. This is because when we went to the airport we found that the flight wasn't going to come in till 4:30 am! Now, I suggested the idea that we head to a hotel nearby and stay the night. The first place we went to was priced at 3,900 for the night, we said F that, and went down the road and found another place with a more reasonable 1,200 for the few hours. We checked in and slept on this bed. 

A few hours later, when he woke me up, I was startled to wake up in an unfamiliar environment, and pulled a punch at my friend. It took me a few seconds to realise who he was and I calmed down. He later said that that kind of stress is not good for me. 

Anyway, staying at the hotel was a good move, because my friend would have had to go home and come back early morning, making him groggy the whole day. 

We went to the airport a bit late at 5:30, to the Air India cargo hold, and got the two eyeballs. Im not sure if they were from the same person though. I got to carry the eyeballs from the cargo hold to the car! There was an army person on a desk who made us sign for it, apart from the office where we collected it from. We actually collected it special from the back office from a kind old lady, instead of the deserted front office, which had a big sign that said "Photography not allowed here". 

Yes, I have cool friends. 

We got the eyeballs and came back. 

The next day, on 19th, the eyeballs were used to restore the sight for two people, who got one eyeball each. Well, technically, the cornea, not the eyeball, but it is cooler to imagine disembodied eyeballs.
