Getting stuff printed on a dot matrix is a slow and laborious process. If you want to use a4 sheets instead of dot matrix sheets, then you have to manually feed in every sheet, and put the printer online, and wait till the machine noisily churns out your stuff.
But you have to marvel at the designing. There is this ribbon, and the head punches the ribbon. Sort of like a typewriter, but the head is formed anew for every char. This is some really cool piece of designing, the resolution really is indistinguishable from an inkjet as long as you are printing plain text. Imagine the complexity of an ink or laser jet...
