1990s game engines

 Build engine - Developed by Ken Silverman for 3D Realms, the Build engine was used to create popular games such as Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior.

Quake engine - Developed by id Software for the game Quake, this engine was popular for first-person shooters and was used in games such as Hexen II and SiN.

Lithtech engine - Developed by Monolith Productions, the Lithtech engine was used in games such as Blood II: The Chosen and Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.

RenderWare - Developed by Criterion Games, RenderWare was used in games such as Grand Theft Auto III and Burnout.

Genesis3D - A free open-source engine developed by Eclipse Entertainment, it was used in games such as Deer Hunter 3 and Duke Nukem: Time to Kill.

Unreal Engine - Developed by Epic Games, the Unreal Engine was used in games such as Deus Ex and Unreal Tournament.

GoldSrc - Developed by Valve Corporation, the GoldSrc engine was used in games such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike.

Dark Engine - Developed by Looking Glass Studios, the Dark Engine was used in games such as Thief: The Dark Project and System Shock 2.

NetImmerse - Developed by NDL, the NetImmerse engine was used in games such as The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Freedom Force.

Odyssey engine - Developed by Westwood Studios, the Odyssey engine was used in games such as Command & Conquer: Red Alert and Lands of Lore III.
