So as kids, my grandfather took my mom and her muslim friend to a temple, where she put on the kunkum with the rest of them. On the way back, the azaan started, and she put on her headscarf. Then she looked around, and removed it.
My grandfather told her, "Don't look at us and remove it. You follow what your parents have taught you and what you feel is good. If you think it is silly, then don't put it on, but please don't remove it just because we are here."
She put on the scarf.
